The cautions to checking accounts, savings account, loans and credit cards—to be found in chapters 1 through 4—are of course, equally applicable to those services when offers by a banking alternative. But banking alternatives, because they are less strictly regulated than banks, warrant some additional caveats.
Checking and Savings Services
Before investing in a money market mutual fund, read the prospectus carefully. Although money market funds have an exemplary safety record, those that invest solely in government securities enjoy a small margin of safety over those that invest, for example in bank repurchase agreements. Those that invest in tax-free instruments will give you a lower yield in return for the tax exemption but only a careful estimate of your tax obligations can tell you whether or not the lower yield is desirable for you.
